Getting the Log Burning Stove Ready for Winter

If you think installing a log burning stove is as simple as a trip to your local DIY store, think again! In this video, we take you through the rollercoaster ride of getting our log burner ready for winter.

We knew we had to start by having our chimney inspected and swept, which involved paperwork and dealing with the insurance company. Safety precautions were a top priority, so we also installed smoke and carbon monoxide detectors around the house. And let’s not forget the solid granite plinth we had to ensure nothing flammable was within range of the log burner. Easy-peasy, right? Wrong!

Renovations & Scorched Beams: The Saga Begins!

During previous renovations, we discovered crumbling mortar and smoke leakage, which had been going on for who knows how long! As if that wasn’t enough, we found missing bricks and a chimney on the verge of collapse. Our stone and timber constructed house even had scorched wooden beams in the flue. Talk about fire hazards!

Renovations Nightmare: Crumbling Mortar and Smoke Leakage

To protect that aging wood, we had to keep the flue liner at a safe distance. We secured it on ceramic tiles, keeping it clear from the vulnerable wooden elements. Oh, and did we mention the un-capped chimneys? Those were an owl’s dream come true, with wheelbarrow loads of nesting material coming in each year. Let’s not forget about the pesky pine-martins attacking our beams!

Nesting Owls and a 12Kw Log Burner!

Once we overcame those challenges, we finally found a 12Kw log burner at a reasonable price. With our large house and minimal insulation, this log burner became a crucial part of our heating strategy. Good thing we have our own woodland and access to cheap wood from local farmers. Fuel supply? Sorted!

Of course, getting the flue pipe straight wasn’t a walk in the park. It required special universal joints and high-temperature sealant. But hey, with a solid stainless steel tube and regular scrubbing, we can keep it squeaky clean ourselves. Of course, we still have to get it professionally swept annually to keep the legal inspectors happy and smiling.

Finally, after fixing the drafts, re-fitting double-glazed windows, and adding extra insulation, our log burner brings not only warmth but also efficiency and safety to our home. It’s a win-win-win situation!
